Tim Challies has a couple of posts on worship and some criteria for testing whether or not a song is appropriate for a worship service. This is something that I think about from time to time, and I would have to say that I by and large agree with Tim.
The worship situation in most American churches is nearly enough to drive anyone to Exclusive Psalmody.
